Character History: Sans is the second major character that the player meets when playing Undertale. He has a huge role in the story no matter what route the player decides to take, acting as comic relief, a sort of guide, the player’s judge, and lastly, the dispenser of A Bad Time.

Sans’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Other characters in the game say that he and his brother, Papyrus, both just showed up one day in Snowdin. It’s heavily implied that Sans is not originally from the current timeline, but that he arrived there after some kind of time travel accident. Sans refers to trying to “go back,” and says that he has since given up trying. His history with time travel explains both his genre savvy and his awareness of the powers of “Reset” and “Save” (referring to the literal ability of the player to save the game and reset it to start from scratch). It seems that Sans has probably lived through a good amount of game resets, but it’s unclear how much he actually remembers from previous timelines. He does seem to retain at least impressions, enough to realize when he’s reliving events, and it’s likely he has dreams about previous timelines considering how much he sleeps.

Another thing heavily implied through certain things revealed in the game is that Sans at one point had some kind of connection to W.D. Gaster. Gaster was the Royal Scientist before Alphys, and though very little is known about him, what is known is that he invented the Core. The Core is basically a giant power station in the Hotlands which powers the entire Underground, and seems to have some uncovered secrets as to its true purposes. Gaster fell into the Core and was scattered across time and space. Sans likely worked with Gaster, and seems to have been trying to find a way to bring him back prior to the events of the game. His work with Gaster would explain Sans’s awareness of time travel, Save, Reset and Determination. It might also explain where Sans’s powers came from, as Sans has powers unlike any other monster you meet in the game.

Despite Sans’s crazy powers and mysterious backstory, the main role he plays is that of a lazy, goofy skelebro who just knows more than he lets on. He is mostly interested with keeping his brother happy and making sure the human (the player) survives, though considering he knows the human can just reload saves, he doesn’t ever interfere or make any effort to actually save them. He doesn’t really like doing anything he doesn’t have to—he’s more interested in seeing what happens, since the whole point is that the human makes their choices on their own. He never even reveals that there’s anything more to him than puns until later in the game, when he makes it pretty clear that he could have easily killed the player at any time.

Sans is also defined by his relationships with other monsters, especially Papyrus. Papyrus is his brother, a taller skeleton who as goofy if not moreso than Sans is. Sans loves his brother dearly and is very protective of him, and this manifests mostly in Sans always trying to keep Papyrus happy. He completely unironically thinks that Papyrus is the coolest guy around, and it’s pretty clear that he highly values Papyrus’s innocence. Papyrus might be a total dorky goofball and extremely naïve, but he’s certainly not useless, and Sans knows this. Papyrus represents a real threat to the player and is skilled at blue attacks; otherwise Sans would likely intervene to protect his brother.

Sans’s other relationship is with Toriel, though he doesn’t know her name. He met her one day while practicing knock knock jokes on the door in the woods that led to the Ruins, where Toriel lives. One day she answers from behind the door, and the two strike up a relationship that mostly consists of telling each other bad jokes and making them both laugh. Toriel is the one to beg Sans to watch over and protect any human who comes through the door. Since this conversation seems to happen shortly before Frisk (the player character) leaves the Ruins, Sans is able to meet Frisk before any other monsters do. In a way, this does guarantee Frisk’s safety, since it puts them on the path to dealing with Papyrus, who is more interested in capturing a human than killing them. This all also begs the question of whether Sans has encountered humans before the player enters the game. Six other humans have fallen into the Underground before then, after all, not including the first fallen human. There’s a good chance that Sans has met humans before Frisk, perhaps under…less pleasant circumstances. He straight up tells the player that if Toriel hadn’t asked Sans to spare the human, then they would be dead where they stand.

Basically, Sans is a scary enigma wrapped in thousands of layers of puns and bad jokes.

Abilities/Special Powers: Hoo boy here we go.

First off, Sans is a monster, which means he’s mostly made of magic. Being made of magic has its upsides and downsides. It means you can use magic, which is always great, but it also means that you’re relatively easy to destroy. Monsters are surprisingly fragile, and Sans in particular might as well be made of glass. Being made of magic, monsters are very vulnerable to other people’s intent. So if they were to be attacked by someone with real violence in their heart and killing intent, the average monster would die relatively easily.

Sans is special because he’s the weakest enemy in the entire game, with 1 HP, 1 Attack and 1 Defense.

Fortunately he compensates for this by also being the most powerful enemy in the game. Sans has a wide array of powers, not least of all being literal time travel. It’s unclear exactly to what extent he can time travel—the implication seems to be that he used to travel through time rather extensively, but can’t anymore. Clearly his experiences with time travel have left him extremely genre savvy, as he’s not only aware of the player’s ability to reset and save, but seems to also retain some memories from previous timelines. He’s so genre savvy that he literally can interrupt his own cutscenes to attack the player before they’re ready.

Sans is a master of blue attacks like his brother, which applies gravity to the player’s soul, forcing them to have to jump to avoid attacks. Unlike Papyrus, however, he can actually telekinetically grab the player’s soul and fling them around. His attacks come in the form of bones, as is only appropriate. Sans can also teleport and dodge, something that no other monster can do. His most absurd power, however, is the ability to summon giant floating skulls that look like a cross between a goat skull and some kind of dragon skull. These floating skulls are called Gaster Blasters and shoot giant lasers.

It should be stated that Sans doesn’t really use his powers unless he absolutely has to. He’s a lazybones who prefers to either talk his way out of things or just not do anything at all. This mentality comes from a combination of general laziness and his viewpoint that nothing really matters since everything can always be reset.

Lastly, Sans being a skeleton, he has most of the properties of an…actual human skeleton. He’s not technically a human skeleton, though—he’s a monster. This means that he doesn’t actually follow the rules of what, yanno, actual bones can do, so he can move his arms and face without the need for muscles or ligaments or any of that stuff that humans need.

Third-Person Sample: Sans is no stranger to alternate timelines or waking up in a strange place with no memory of how he got there. But the thing is, usually he wakes up somewhere that’s at least recognizable. In that it’s usually underground somewhere.

This is the first time he’s ever seen sunlight. Except…no, that’s not right. He sort of remembers this. The golden light, that unique warmth on his bones. There’s nothing else quite like that, and it’s hard to forget it after feeling it once. When had he felt it before? He chuckles a little. Guess the kid had gotten them out at least once. Maybe more than once, but Sans learned long ago that it’s best not to think about that.

Still. Point being, this just ain’t right. This isn’t the Underground, and it’s not really the surface either. It’s something else. Some kind of other timeline, or maybe a whole different reality. He’s read about the theory. Has even put some research into it, though that was…a long time ago. Ever since the machine broke, he sort of tabled the idea of ever entering another timeline or reality under his own will. He’s much more used to being yanked around by the whims of humans.

That’s probably what this is, then. There’s no way that he came here on his own, or by accident, and it’s been a very long time since he lost control of his powers. So this is someone else’s doing. Someone who’s not Frisk, since the kid would have used a power of this magnitude long before now. That flower, maybe, but this doesn’t really seem like its style.

Finding out who’s responsible for this should be a real barrel of laughs.

First-Person Sample: Huh. So this is like UnderNet, yeah? Never did use that very much. It takes someone way more focused than me to keep track of all those internet shenanigans. I guess it makes sense that the surface would have something so similar. Though…this isn’t really the surface, is it? Not exactly. Though you almost coulda fooled me, all this sunlight.

So…if someone wants to fill me in on all this, that’d be much appreciated. And, uh, if anyone sees an impossibly cool, really tall skeleton who yells a lot and goes by Papyrus, do me a solid and tell him his bro is lookin’ for him.

…Hey, so…stop me if you’ve heard this one. A skeleton walks into a bar—
