[Papyrus spent that much time and effort on him. And...logically, he knows that Papyrus spends that kind of time and effort on pretty much everything, and he also knows that Papyrus loves him. But that nasty little voice that's always in the back of his skull never stops reminding him that Sans isn't worth it. That he's just a parasite, a leech draining away people's time and effort and love.]
[Maybe he's getting a little better at ignoring it, or at least trying to.]
[He takes a shaky breath and squeezes Papyrus a little tighter.]
i love you too, papyrus.
[Just gotta. Get that out there. Finally he pulls back and slowly lets go. He's grinning from ear to metaphorical ear when he looks up at his brother.]
yeah. yeah, we gotta take it for a test spin. um...yeah, the constellations kinda change every night, but we uh, we can make them up as we find 'em. and i can, uh...with a scope this good i could show you other stuff, too. deep space objects. well uh, i mean, they're not real either, but they look real. nebulae, star clusters...
[He sort of laughs a little and rubs the side of his skull.]
IF THE CONSTELLATIONS CHANGE SO QUICKLY EVERY NIGHT, THEN THERE MUST BE SOME SORT OF WAY TO RECORD THE CONSTELLATIONS WE FIND ANOTHER WAY!!! THAT WAY, WE’LL HAVE PROOF THAT WHAT WE FIND REALLY DOES EXIST!!!
…OH, I GOT IT!!!
[He quickly pulls out his phone!!]
IF WE PUT THE CAMERA UP TO THE VIEWER, THEN WE COULD TAKE PICTURES OF EVERYTHING THAT WE FIND!!! NYEH HEH HEH!!!
[Sometimes his genius is staggering!
He laughs along with his brother and playfully nudges him. Why did he get so worked up about him not liking his present in the first place, anyway? There was nothing to worry about!]
I STRIVE TO BRING ONLY THE BEST GIFTS!!! I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING ALL OF THE DIFFERENT STARS AND OTHER WEIRD DEEP SPACE STUFF!!! I’M ASSUMING THAT STAR CLUSTERS ARE JUST…A BUNCH OF STARS PUT TOGETHER, BUT A NEBULAE JUST SOUNDS LIKE A BRAND OF COOL CLOTHING.
[He hurriedly looks up at the sky again, looking this way and that. Who knew that there was more space stuff hiding beyond the stars?]
[He beams as he starts carefully setting up the scope and tripod.] that's a great idea, bro. the field of vision might be a bit narrow, but i can fix that. think i saw an eyepiece in here designed for cameras.
[He's very cautious and attentive as he puts together the scope. It's probably one of the few times Papyrus has seen him pay close attention to something. One loose screw and pieces could start to fall off, though, or the tripod could buckle. Can't go ruining the best telescope he's ever owned right after getting it.]
hee hee, you'd be right. star clusters are kinda like...star families. there's two different kinds. one kind is all very old stars, all closely packed together. the other kind is for new, baby stars. there's usually fewer of them then, but they're a lot brighter. and they're more spread out, so they make neat patterns. kinda like tiny constellations. and nebulae are these colorful clouds left over after a star dies. sometimes the clouds start to form new stars. it's this cyclical thing.
[He'd normally be way, way less into talking about any of this, even around Papyrus. It's nerd stuff, and no one really likes hearing about nerd stuff. Plus he's Sans. He's not really...supposed to get passionate about anything. Not like this.]
[But Papyrus wouldn't have gotten him the scope if he didn't already know how much this all means to Sans. And he's gotten a bit better about talking about things he likes. Part of that whole honesty thing.]
oh, and...i haven't shown you a binary star yet, have i?
[That was the last Papyrus.]
i gotta find a binary star tonight and show you. they're neat.
WOWIE!!! IF WE CAN GET A FEW EXCELLENT PHOTOS OF THE NIGHT SKY, THEN WE COULD PRESERVE OUR CREATED CONSTELLATIONS FOR AN ETERNITY!!!
[Papyrus is pretty amazed to see that Sans is really taking his time putting this together. He’s so used to seeing his brother just…half assing it when it comes to building things, so this is a nice surprise. The fact that he’s already taking his time and putting so much care into it cements it for him: this was probably the best choice for a present he could have made!
He smiles and nods as Sans explains all of the differences between the different star clusters and the nebulae. He’s not going to pretend that he’s an astronomy expert like his brother is, but at least he’s wording everything in a way that he can understand. He’d never say this out loud, but he can’t usually understand all of the technical jargon that science has.
…is this the most he’s heard Sans talk about something? It really feels like it. Wowie, he’s REALLY in a good mood!!]
A BINARY STAR??? WHAT’S THAT??? IT SOUNDS LIKE…A MORE ADVANCED STAR.
[It might even help to track patterns in the sky, see if anything ever repeats itself. Maybe Wonderland has a yearly cycle? Assuming Sans is here for that much longer, he could theoretically figure out how to predict the night sky. Wouldn't that be something?]
[The telescope is pretty intuitive, despite how complicated it is. Another minute and Sans is tightening the last screw, then stepping back to make sure everything is level.]
binary stars are my favorite, i think. hehe, i guess you could think of them as more advanced.
[He peers through the scope, adjusts the focus and then grins. God, that's crisp. He swivels the scope slowly, trying to find a good star.]
binary stars are basically...double stars. so, sometimes a star will have a--a partner star. one star is usually big and bright, and the second one is much smaller and dimmer. but they orbit each other. pretty much their whole lives. sometimes stars like that are born together, or sometimes a bigger star will attract a smaller one into its orbit. i guess it just...
[He's glad it's dark out and he's facing away from Papyrus, because this is going to sound so cheesy, and he's pretty sure he's blushing a little.]
AHA!! AN EXCELLENT IDEA, BROTHER!! THAT WAY, WE COULD RELIVE THE MEMORIES WHENEVER WE WANTED TO…
[Not to mention that they could also use the scrapbook to capture even more memories that happen in Wonderland as well! It might be good if one of them leaves but then comes back again. The other brother could show them the scrapbook, and that could jog their memory!!
It’s a huuuuuuge stretch, but Papyrus thinks it can be done, even if he can’t exactly recall the last two times he has been here himself. He just needs to try harder at that!
As Sans completes setting up the telescope, Papyrus sits down beside him on the concrete, looking up at the stars himself. He takes in what Sans is saying about binary stars, doing his upmost to commit it to memory. He’s not even sure if he can find a binary star without the telescope’s help, but who knows? He might get lucky!
Papyrus can’t help but chuckle when Sans finishes his bit and playfully nudges him.]
NYEH HEH HEH!!! SO I’M LIKE THE BIG SHINY STAR AND YOU’RE THE TINY NOT-SO-BRIGHT STAR?? THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT.
[He smiles wide. Yeah, this is a pretty good analogy for the two of them. The big, confident star with the smaller, more laid back star, hanging out with each other for their entire lives. It’s a constant that he doesn’t really want to let go of. Sure, of course Papyrus wants to achieve bigger and better things, but he wants to do it with his brother around. It’d just be…weird without him. If his brother’s too lazy to go up to the top, then he’ll just have to carry him up there with him!]
SO WHEREVER THAT BIG BRIGHT STAR GOES, THE SMALLER STAR WILL FOLLOW, RIGHT?? AND IS IT THE SAME IF THE SMALLER STAR WANDERS OFF SOMEWHERE TOO??
[It would be good for both record keeping and as something like insurance. Memory in solid form, kind of like Max's photo gallery.]
[He's quiet after he finishes the explanation, wondering what Papyrus is going to think about all that. It's corny, sure, but maybe it also...sounds weird. People aren't supposed to be dependent on each other the way binary stars are, right?]
[He grins again when Papyrus nudges him.]
hehe, exactly. there's no way i'd be a big, bright star. so that's gotta be you.
[He remembers a similar talk with Mettaton. Stars are kind of like souls. Even a tiny, withered dim soul like Sans's is at least still a star.]
uh...heh, sorta. the metaphor kinda falls apart when you dig into it too much...
[He also doesn't want to say that sometimes the smaller star siphons off material from the larger star, leeching its energy until both stars are destroyed in a supernova. That seems...kinda morbid.]
but...yeah. heh. wherever one star goes...the other goes too.
[He steps back from the telescope and beams at Papyrus.]
NYEH HEH HEH!! UNLESS YOU SUDDENLY GOT A SECOND GROWTH SPURT OR SOMETHING. BUT EVEN THEN, I THINK I’D STILL BE THE BRIGHTEST ONE.
[Which isn’t something to be sad about! There’s not a lot of people that can compare to Papyrus’s greatness.]
WOWIE!!! YOU FOUND ONE ALREADY?? LET ME SEE!!!
[Papyrus jumps back up and cautiously looks through the telescope’s eyepiece. He definitely wants to be careful around his brother’s new present. He can’t go breaking it after he’s only had it for three minutes!
It takes him a little bit to try and locate it himself, but soon enough, he finds it, clear as day. Two stars close together, one big and bright, the other small and dull.
Just like the two of them.]
WOWIE…THIS IS INCREDIBLE!! I DIDN’T KNOW THAT TWO STARS COULD BE SO CLOSE TO EACH OTHER!! I’D THINK THAT THEY WOULD COLLIDE INTO EACH OTHER OR SOMETHING…
[He doesn’t say anything else for a while, he just continues to stare at the two stars.]
I’M…VERY GLAD THAT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO STAY HERE IN WONDERLAND TO CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY, BROTHER. I WAS WORRIED THAT I WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO BE HERE FOR THIS.
[He remembers hearing that the previous two times he’s been here, he didn’t stay for a long time. He wonders if this is the longest he’s stayed in Wonderland yet?]
[Papyrus will always be the brightest thing in the universe.]
[He chuckles and steps back to let his brother look. This is a part of astronomy that's still kind of new to him--the whole getting to show things to other people and watch their reactions thing. It's--nice. Really nice. Downright rewarding. It makes him feel like this hobby of his isn't all that silly and dumb and nerdy.]
heh, yeah. it's kinda complicated, but it has to do with gravity. so it's kinda like they hold onto each other, at just the right distance.
[Speaking of silly, he's getting emotional again, and it gets worse when Papyrus goes and says that. For a moment it's actually hard for him to maintain his composure.]
yeah. i, uh. i'm really glad too. this, heh, it's a good birthday.
[He hasn't had a lot of those.]
i'm happy, bro.
[Another silly thing, but he's felt the past several years like he needs to actually tell someone when he's happy. Like as...a witness, almost. Confirmation that it's real, that it happened.]
[He's gonna melt if he lets himself get any more mushy.]
GRAVITY, HUH…WAIT, THERE’S GRAVITY IN SPACE??? I THOUGHT SPACE WAS COMPLETELY DEVOID OF GRAVITY. SO MYSTERIOUS…
[Papyrus doesn’t know much about space, but isn’t space famous for having no gravity? It’s very confusing.
He continues to stare up at the binary star and only manages to pull himself away from the telescope when Sans finally mentions that he’s happy.
This. This is rare. He’s been around his brother long enough to know when he’s literally putting on a smile and when he’s genuinely happy.
He can’t help but pull Sans into a quick one arm hug.]
EXCELLENT!!! THAT’S FANTASTIC, BROTHER!!! I’M HAPPY THAT YOU’RE HAPPY!!!
[He’s really been making great strides and Papyrus couldn’t be happier for him for it. The fact that he’s so happy on a day that’s usually not so great for him…it makes his soul want to soar!]
OH, RIGHT!!! YEAH, YEAH LET’S DO THAT. I WONDER IF YOU CAN FIND ANY PLANETS THROUGH THAT TELESCOPE AS WELL!!!
oh, gravity's everywhere. even people have gravity, though it's real small. you might be thinking of sound. there's no sound in space.
[Sort of at least, but he's not gonna get into all that.]
[Papyrus understands immediately and Sans can't help a very quiet almost-giggle when Papyrus hugs him. God, he really does have the best brother in the world.]
yeah, well, i'm happy that you're happy that i'm happy.
[Take that!]
[He goes back to moving the telescope here and there, scanning the sky.]
i bet i could. i've found planets before, though none of them are the normal ones.
[He ponders this for a moment. This pretty much goes against everything he’s seen and heard about for space. Granted, the only real exposure he had about space was not only his brother, but also the anime he watched with Alphys.]
I’M PRETTY SURE THE ANIME ALPHYS SHOWED ME LIED TO ME, THEN. THERE WAS THIS SUPER COOL OUTER SPACE SCENE IN ONE OF THE MEW KISSY CUTIE EPISODES, AND MEW MEW WAS JUST SCREAMING OUT DIFFERENT ATTACK NAMES WHILE FIGHTING A GIANT METEOR. I CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!! WHY WOULD A PERFECTLY GOOD CARTOON SHOW FOR COOL PEOPLE AND BABIES BUT MOSTLY COOL PEOPLE LIE TO ME LIKE THAT???
[For shame, Mew Mew Kissy Cutie.]
OH YEAH??? WELL, I’M HAPPY THAT YOU’RE HAPPY THAT I’M HAPPY THAT YOU’RE HAPPY THAT I’M HAPPY THAT YOU’RE HAPPY!!! TIMES INFINITY!!!
[CHECKMATE.
He stops his childish bantering to stare up at the night sky, as if he can also see the stars up close without the telescope.]
HUH, DIFFERENT PLANETS?? HOW DIFFERENT ARE THEY???
heh, yeah, that's pretty common. tv and movies and such put explosions in space cause they look cooler. heh, wait, so you really sat through a whole anime once? aw, bro, i'm proud of you. you're joining the nerd ranks. slowly but surely.
[Come to the dark side, bro.]
[He actually giggles at that, but catches himself quickly and turns it into a more normal-sounding laugh. Yeesh. He really is in a good mood.]
well, they're not the solar system planets, that's for sure. they change every night too. i dunno what kind they are. it's hard to tell that kinda thing without doing some more intense science.
[Spectrographs, chemical analysis, that sort of thing.]
WAIT. NERD RANKS?? I MEAN, NOW I KNOW THAT ANIME ISN'T JUST STRICTLY CARTOONS FOR BABIES, BUT...
[He clearly looks worried that he's going to slowly morph into a nerd, not interested in training or doing any more cool things! At this rate, he'll start to become lazy, just like Sans!!!
Oh GOD NO.]
I AM NOT A NERD!!! I ENJOY COOL THINGS LIKE FIGHTING AND LIFTING WEIGHTS AND OTHER MISCELLANIOUS DEEDS!!!
BUT...THAT SHOW ALPHYS SHOWED ME HAD SO MANY COOL ACTION SCENES, AND I'VE BEEN USING THOSE AS INSPIRATIONS FOR NEW BONE ATTACKS. HM...
[And now he feels torn. Does he swear off anime forever, even if he kind of likes it? What do the people here think about anime, anyway?? If an overwhelming majority of them don't like it, then he should probably stop watching it too. That way, more people will like him!
He quickly shakes off his personal dilemma and looks up at the night sky.]
OKAY, THAT DEFINITELY DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. ARE THE PLANETS JUST ZIPPING BY AT THE SPEED OF LIGHT?? OR ARE WE TELEPORTING EVERYWHERE?? OR...
[He squints his eyes, trying to come up with any more ideas.]
hey, nothing wrong with being a bit of a nerd, yanno? don't worry, you'll never be as bad as me.
[Even if that's still one of his biggest fears.]
that's cool, though. some of those animes have those really neat attacks and action scenes...it makes sense you'd be inspired.
[He looks sidelong at Papyrus.]
nah, it's more like...i mean, none of these stars and such... [He gestures at the sky.] none of it's...really real, bro. wonderland just makes it look real. all of that stuff up there, it was just...built. they're not real stars. so...they don't hafta obey the laws of physics.
[He's known it all along, of course, but saying it out loud really is a bummer.]
it's still nice to look at, though. it looks more real than those shiny stones underground, right?
